In India, there are number of vaccines given to a child since birth right upto the age of five years. and each vaccine has a different schedule and dosage. To complicate further every vaccine has multiple brand names which determines its market cost. There isn’t a proper site which lists out the cost according to the Immunization schedule.

Hence to ease out this nerve wracking job of calculating the cost of vaccination each time you visit a doctor, I have compiled a list of various vaccines with their brand names, cost given at each week. So do download the file and relax!!!

  4. The charges at a peadiatrian’s clinic may also include OPD/consultation charges, hence total cost may vary
  5. The cost also varies depending on the amount vaccine in a vial bought. Single vaccine vial will cost more, hence some of the vaccines have a range of the cost in the document.

        Personally I prefer painless vaccine (which contains acellular pertussis component), and has lesser side effects and negligible discomfort to the baby. Having said that there is no doubt that cellular vaccine have a ‘slightly’ upper hand in providing immunity than acellular. There is also a study carried out in 2013 that suggests the same. Now a days pediatricians also advise atleast one cellular vaccine dose. Do go through all the studies, pros and cons (which I have mentioned in my blog) and make a decision which is good for your baby. Every child’s situation is different like some are LBW, illnesses, multiple babies etc.in which Hexaxim becomes the better option. So make your decision accordingly.

    I m a working mother of a 2.5 years old girl. Within 1st month of her birth we shifted to Canada. now as we are back in India, i m totally screwed up.. Their the vaccine pattern was different so we followed that, but now as per the doctors i have had missed many important life saving vaccines. recently she got diagnosed with VitaD3 deficiency and Vitiligo..

    here the doctors are blaming us for this conditions, but practically we are the first time parents with no elder to guide and we followed only the instructions & immunization given by Canadian Docs.

    can u guide me how to get things in India back on track… Here docs are not ready to accept Canadian Chart and forcing us to go for over all new charts. which means giving her the vaccines which were meant to be given at 2 months, 6 months, 1 year and so on.

    Can u please please help me?

    1. Hi,
      The schedule for a particular vaccine doesn’t change much, the problem is vaccines come in combinations, depending on the brand the schedule will also change. So there is a difference between the brands of vaccines available in both the countries. I suggest you go into the details of what combination vaccines were given to your child in Canada and compare it with the schedule in India, it will take time no doubt, but will be worth the effort. I suppose BCG vaccine wouldn’t have been given there, so that one you will have to cover soon. I didn’t get the connection between Vit D deficiency, vitiligo and vaccination. All three are not related to each other.

    1. Hi, no doubt the cost of typhoid vaccine is lesser than mentioned by your doctor. What you are suggesting is a good cost effective idea but you have to also keep in mind the method of giving injection to small children is different than adults and have to be given be an expirienced personnel. Secondly any side effects after injections have to be looked at. I suggest you approach other pediatricians and government health centers in your area and then take a decision.

      1. There will be no harm to baby by hepatitis B vaccine in combination vaccine if it is given 4times at birth & 6,10,14 weeks?

For active immunization , it is recommended that three intramuscular injections of 0.5 ml of the combination vaccine be administered at 6,10 and 14 weeks schedule following the birth dose of Hep B. A booster dose of DTP and Hib should be given at the age of 15-18 months. A reinforcing injection of DTP should be administered at 5 years of age

  24. Dear Mam,
    First of all thanks for the very useful information. I would like to know that there are difference in vaccination chart of Govt Hospitals & Private Practitioners. I have preferred Govt Sector for my baby but there are some vaccine which are not being used by Govt Hospitals e.g. Pneumococcal & MMR.
    Will you please suggest me if they are much necessary to the baby? If yes and if i missed them, what should I do now?

    1. Hi,

      Yes there are two schedules:
      1) Universal Immunization Programme (UIP), which is recommended by govt of India
      2) IAP schedule recommended by Indian Academy Of Pediatricians.
      You can google the details.

      The difference between the two is that most of the vaccines under UIP are provided free of costs at govt centres (as decided by the govt as the most basic and necessary ones even for people who cannot afford). That does not mean the IAP schedule is unnecessary or misleading. It is also very important to protect your child from complications of some diseases. If the cost is the problem, do cut down on the cost of some toys rather than avoiding vaccines.If you have missed any you can start the scheduled of the missed vaccine again.

One of my family doctor is advising that to vaccination (10ml) is required for my whole family members for 0 & 1st month. my mother and me(except my father) all are HbsAg negative. Which vaccination is to be taken and what’s the cost of Hepatitis b for 10ml. Please give me a solution…

  28. I was charged Rs 6000 for Boostrix and Enteroshield vaccination to my child .The price of Boostrix is 1098 and that of Enteroshield is 1281.Why did the paediatrician charged me six thousand for this two vaccines ? His fee is Rs 500.

  29. after 14 weeks we had only dpth3 and hib3, ipv2 was not available, in pondicherry ipv2 only available with government hospitals where they say will administer only with other vaccine ie ipv2 cannot be given alone.
    kindly let me know as ipv 1 was also delayed because of non availability.

    1. Hi,

      The IPV in government hospitals is available in combination with DPT and hepatitis. If you have missed the IPV dose you can give IPV seperately using a different brand. Do consult a pediatrician regarding if you can continue IPV 2 and 3 now or start the whole IPV schedule over

    I have 4 month old son, and i have done with all three vaccination but my doctor has missed pcv and told that she will be givin at 6 month
    Is that ok with it, i dont know why she suggested so, am just worried about the missed vaccination, so please suggest what can be done.

  35. Hi your articles are of great help. Would request if you could enlighten us on some typhoid vaccine which has life long validity for kids. I was advised the same by a paediatrician during vaccination of my 05 year old daughter. I had administered her typhoid vaccine at 02 years. Hence I am confused if we should give her the typhoid vaccine again.

      The below is the newer recommendations by IAP (2016)
      There are two types of Typhoid vaccines: Vi-PS conjugate and Vi-PS (polysaccharide) vaccines, in which Vi conjugate typhoid vaccine should be preferred over Vi-PS vaccine wherever feasible. Currently, two typhoid conjugate vaccines, Typbar-TCV® and PedaTyph® are available in Indian market, the schedule of both is:
      1) Primary dose at 9-12 months (through 23 months)
      2) Followed by a booster at 2 years of age

      *An interval of at least 4 weeks with the MMR vaccine should be maintained while administering Typbar-TCV® and PedaTyph® vaccines
      *Typhoid revaccination every 3 years, if Vi-polysaccharide vaccine is used

      Hence, the it depends on what type of vaccine is used

  36. Hi
    My baby born on 19th Jan 2017. Hepatitis-B vaccine given on same day. OPV given on 29th Jan 2017 in pulse polio program, BCG vaccine given on 3rd Feb 2017. Doctor has called on 6th March 2017 for OPV & PENTAVAC vaccine.
    Is that Ok? But I know hepatitis is given in 0…….. 1 …… 6 formulation. Kindly advise….

    1. Pentavac contains hepatitis B vaccine. So on 6th March your baby will be approximately 1.5 months. Since hepatitis vaccine is given at 1 month, the schedule prescribed to you is ok. Make sure IPV is given seperately to your baby.

    1. Sanofi Pasteur, has launched liquid 6-in-1 vaccine – Hexaxim recntly against 6 major childhood diseases – diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), polio, haemophilus influenza B and hepatitis B. Cost of the vaccine is approximately Rs. 4800 to Rs. 5000/-

    1. The Government of India has recommended the National immunization schedule, which is followed in all government hospitals and clinics. It provides vaccination against 8 diseases free of cost to all children who visit government facilities.
      • BCG- against tuberculosis
      • OPV- Oral Polio Vaccine
      • Hep B- Hepatitis B
      • HiB- H. influenze B
      • DPT- Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus
      • TT- Tetanus toxoid

      And recently i.e in July 2014, it was announced that India will provide Rotavirus, Rubella and Injectable Poilio vaccine free of cost.

    Kindly also let me know whether the 5th year dose which is a combination of two injections has some adverse effects . As after giving to my daughter it caused a swelling & redness around 10 cm and was paining a lot for more than 4 days and she was facing painful while walking. Although it reducing but even after 10 days there is hardness of skin & pain still persist.

    1. Hi,

      I do suppose you mean DPT booster dose which is given at 4 to 6 years. Rest of the injections like varicella and typhoid are usually completed before that, according to recent IAP recommendations. When there is redness and swelling after an injection (which is common) I usually advice to mark the boundaries of the swelling with a pen and monitor its size. If the size increases, do consult the doctor.

      Since the swelling has already subsided there isn’t much to worry, but it is advisable to consult the doctor for any remnant cyst formation.

  41. My Baby is 3 months On his Second Vaccination his Pead Dr. Gave Pantaxim for DPT & Now This Time She Said Pantaxim( Paunless) is Short in Market So We are Giving Pantavac (Painfull).

    Now my concern is Next Time can we go for Pantaxim(Painless) Again, as my child is not comfertable with Painfull Vacc.
    Is There any harm in changing again the Vacc. Also Can I go to any other Dr. As She Charge to high. (rs. 5000 for Patavac + PCV13 + Rotavirus)
    ( Dose all Dr. Use Same Brand Vacc or Diff brand are available in market.) As I dont want to change the brand every time. But if next time she Use Painfull vacc. I will preffer to Go to another Dr.

    1. Hi,

      1. Shifting from painless to painful (or vice versa) is OK, until and unless no other vaccine is missed from the schedule. I suggest you stick to pentavac for the next one also, but if its causing too much discomfort, pentaxim is also OK (discuss in detail with your pediatrician).
      2. The cost of all three combined, looks fine to me.
      3. Mostly the brands available are one or at the most two of each vaccine. And most doctors prefer the common tried and tested one

      Thanks for writing.
      1) BCG, hepatitis and OPV is given at birth. I didn’t understand why it was given at 1 month of age
      2) Choosing the right pentavalent vaccine is upto you. Efficacy of both the vaccine is almost same. Difference is between the price and post vaccine discomfort to the baby.       3) Giving IPV ie injectable vaccine is a must. After that if you miss a dose of OPV it is still ok. But try to attend pulse polio and give the schedule OPV whenever possible
      4)PCV and RV, are optional by the immunization schedule determined by pediatric council and government, since they give weightage to more important vaccines. But i suggest you go for both since it protects a baby from meningitis and diarrhoea respectively. If the cost is high, buy lesser toys for your baby this year 😊

    I want to know the maximum time period between HEP-A FIST AND SECOND DOSE.
    As i have taken 8 months before the first dose.so can i take the second dose as well or time is barred.

    1. The difference between the two doses is 6 to 18 months.(Minimum to maximum)

      The following is recommended by CDC:
      outine vaccination:
      •Initiate the 2-dose HepA vaccine series at 12 through 23 months; separate the 2 doses by 6 to 18 months.
      •Children who have received 1 dose of HepA vaccine before age 24 months should receive a second dose 6 to 18 months after the first dose.
      •For any person aged 2 years and older who has not already received the HepA vaccine series, 2 doses of HepA vaccine separated by 6 to 18 months may be administered if immunity against hepatitis A virus infection is desired.

    And first vaccination was given just after birth.
    Then the next vaccination was given last month and it was painful injection but now I want to change…. painful to painless injection for my son and I also read all information given by you
    But my baby doctor advised me for giving the painful one…… because the first vaccination was given painful so I can’t star now the painless injection for my little one.
    Now my question is
    Can I give the painless injection for my son…. his next vaccination date was 24.11.2016 but I can’t take the decision
    Please advise me guide me

    1. Hi Ayantika,

      Let me first clear this fact thay both the injections are painful at the time of injection. The difference is that acellular DPT (i.e painless) injection has lesser side effects like swelling, fever, post injection pain etc.

      The second difference is that the pentavalent injections not only have DPT but 2 more constituents. Hence the schedule of immunization changes on the type of vaccine chosen by you. For more information do refer my post :

        Thanks a lot for the most useful information that each parent should take a note .

        Also I think sharing my thoughts on below parameters apart from cost that the parents should maintain the chart properly provided by the hospital at the birth of child. Also the chart should have the columns for Brand ( Company ) of vaccine used by Dr alongwih Mfg Batch no ,date of expiry & Dr’s Name who has given the dose . Although this is tough for parents without the help of Drs due to their time constraints .

        This will help for future references & will be a data for any study related the efficacy of the Brands. If this data is maintained by the Dr’s then it will more easily available for references.

        Thanks a lot for your input. You are absolutely right.
        1) Every vaccine should be noted down in the vaccination chart from birth, with due dates and actual date of vaccine given.
        2) At every visit the weight, height/length and head circumference of the child has to be recorded
        3) Pentavalent vaccines come with small stickers in their packaging with the brand name, batch and manufacturing date which can be stuck to the vaccination chart for records. And most of the doctors dutifully do this.
        4)But in case of studies related to efficacy, that will require more detailed data collection, which most government institutes carry out.

  48. GR8 Work Gauriji, Now Atleast people will know how they are exploited by the pediatrics. I was searching for such information & was glad to find out that somebody is working on it. There is one app called vaccinebox on google playstore. It also has updated vaccines price & even store the vaccination schedule in digital format. Hope it will be useful to you for updating your records as well for others to store vaccination information. 👍
