*DISCLAIMER:  Please do check the ingredients and cost of the vaccine on the manufacturer’s website. Do discuss the vaccine in detail with your paediatrician before making a decision. We DO NOT promote any brands. This article is only for information and discussion. It is NOT an advice column.

In India, there are number of vaccines given to a child since birth right upto the age of five years and each vaccine has a different schedule and dosage. To complicate further every vaccine has multiple brand names which determines its market cost. There isn’t a proper site which lists out the cost according to the Immunization schedule.

Hence to ease out this nerve wracking job of calculating the cost of vaccination each time you visit a doctor, I have compiled a list of various vaccines with their brand names, cost given at each week. So do download the file and relax!!!

  6. The choice of DPT combination vaccine may change the immunization schedule. To know how, first read my post: Painful versus painless vaccines – Article on different DPT combination vaccines
  7. Please also download the Recent immunization schedule by IAP -2014, which I have simplified and colour coded from this linkIMPORTANT: Indian Immunization schedule recommended by Indian Academy of Pediatrics (with 2014 modifications)
  8. The Immunization schedule of Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) and Government recommended Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) are two different schedules.
  9. Do consult your doctor thoroughly before every vaccination.
  10. Cost of booster may cost less (200 -500 Rupees) than the main vaccine

  1. My baby is 4 month old, she was given pentvac/easy5 at 6 week and 10 week then pentaxim at 14 week alongwith rotarix and pcv vaccine.so basically she missed initial 2 doses of IPV. Can we go for 2 doses of IPV now at 18 and 22 week? And if yes, which IPV vaccine (brand) is advisable?

  2. MY BABY IS 18 MONTHS OLD NOW. FIRST DOSE OF ROTA VIRUS GIVEN ON 24.09.2016 AFTER 6WEEK OF BIRTH. BUT ANOTHER TWO DOSES COULD NOT BE GIVEN TILL NOW. PLEASE SUGGEST IS THIS POSSIBLE TO GIVE NOW THE REMAINING TWO DOSES ?

    1. Two brands of rotavirus vaccine are available. Your baby will get either 2 or 3 doses, depending on which vaccine is used. Your child must get the first dose of rotavirus vaccine before 15 weeks of age, and the last by age 8 months. I think you will have to repeat the two/three doses again. I suggest you discuss in detail with your pediatrician.

  3. Mam, my doc had given three doses of hexaxim at 6, 10 and 14 weeks along with PCV and rotavirus . Now the baby is 6 months old, the doc said that hepatitis vaccine at 6 months is not necessary as three doses of hexaxim have been already administered. So at six months now.. A just OPV vaccine will be sufficient?? Doc also told at 6 months you can also go for flu vaccine… Is it necessary?

    1. If baby has received 4 doses at birth, 6 weeks, 10 weeks and 14 weeks, no need. The idea is to give at 6 months, if the gap between the first and last does is 6 months, than immunity is better. ‘Flu vaccine’ protects from different strains of flu, (including swine flu) and the vaccine is updated every year. Its upto to you though.

  5. Hello Gauri,
My baby is 1 year 10 months, and I have gone through the updated brand price list that u have provided, but I have few questions:1. In my baby chart it’s showing meningococcal conjugate vaccine at 2 years of age, my doc has given price of 4000, which is not in the list you have provided, 2) and typhoid conjugate booster as price 1200, whereas in the chart provided by u it’s 290/dose, I have just checked the medicine name is enteroshied, marketed by abott group. 3)please suggest what is right and whether these vaccines cost that much and if it’s crucial, why is it not mentioned everywhere.

Thanks for throwing light on this topic as otherwise we parents blindly follows what the doctor says.

    Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi,
      1. Meningococcal vaccine is usually not given routinely in children. It is recommended in high risk cases only. You may be confusing it with pneumoccocal vaccine?
      2. Cost of Enteroshield vaccine is 1821/- , cost vary with different brands.
      3. I suggest you go for it. Different doctors prefer different brands and the cost will also depend on the amount of vaccines they purchase. The price is mentioned on all the manufacturer’s websites.

    1. Hi Mangesh,

It will all depend on the type of vaccine you have chosen.
For example at 6 weeks your baby will require vaccine against DPT+IPV+HIB+Hepatitis+Rotavirus+ PCV
Some of the above vaccine come in combination.
For example if you choose hexaxim it will cost you hexaxim (4800) + rotavirus (1400)+PCV (3800)

So it will all depend on which brand and combination you choose. So I suggest you ask in detail about the vaccine from your doctor and then refer to the chart given in the above article to get an approximate cost.

  8. Hello Gauri,

Thanks a lot for such useful information. I would like to know can we give Typhoid -1 and Hepatitis -A at the same time to 12 month baby.
Just curious, what is the difference among vaccine brand and their price? for e.g. Enteroshield, Typbar, Typherix for Typhoid vaccine

    Thank you.

    1. Hi,
      Thank you 🙂
      1) Generally Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccine is given separately in infants. But in adolescents and adults the vaccine is also available as a combination vaccine and can be given together
      2) The cost of Capsular polysaccharide Typhoid vaccines is more or less same. The cost will increase if its a combination vaccine like Tybar TCV-PFS (Typhoid + Tetanus) will cost more. Also Indian manufacturer will cost less than the imported ones.

      Thanks

  12. Mam, my doc suggested three doses of hexaxim at 6, 10 and 14 weeks, but the baby has already got hep B vaccine at birth and at 6 weeks, is hexaxim necessary at 10 & 14 weeks or pentaxim will do??
Also hexaxim can be taken with PCV and rotavirus?
for rotavirus already the baby has one shot of rotasure company, but the other Doc suggested to go for rotarix? Whether it can be given?

    1. Hi,
      1) Pentaxim will be a better option, since it doesn’t contain hepatitis B. In terms of cost, it is also cheaper. But no harm in hexaxim.
      2) Yes, hexaxim can be given with PCV and Rotavirus
      3) You can go for rotarix for the remaining doses.

  14. yesterday i went to the pediatrician for giving my 18 month old child booster dose of DTP, HiB and IPV. He said IPV is not available hence gave OPV. He also have a vaccine Peda HiB. I am not sure what DTP vaccine he gave. Does Peda HiB contain DTP? After giving vaccine my child has been feverish and there is soreness and pain at the point of injection. I am confused about DTP. Do we have to give it again separately? The doctor did not bother to write anything on the vaccination chart. I am planning to visit him again to enquire about the vaccines he gave.

    1. Hi, IPV cannot be substituted by OPV. IPV is must. If he has somehow missed it due to unavailability, you can give it after some days, may be a week or so, HiB is Haemophilus influenza type b and additional DPT booster is needed. Some vaccines may caused fever and swelling at the injection site. Just mark the area with a marker pen and if the swelling increases consult your pediatrician. Please duly update your vaccination chart at every visit.

    1. Hi

I don’t know any Paediatrician in Mumbai to give an opinion. As per my knowledge you pay for any vaccine after it is administered and not before. Vaccine and its cost vary according to the child’s age.

    1. Painless injection contains IPV too, so that’s not a problem. Do check with your doctor if you will have to give hepatitis B vaccine at 6 months of age since the painless vaccine doesn’t contain hepatitis B.
