Chapter 3: A DAY WITH NANDU

Important Points which can be asked as Fill in the Blanks or MCQs:

  1. An adult elephant can eat more than 100 kilogram of leaves and twigs in one day.
  2. Elephants are the biggest land animals and are different from other animals because of their trunk.
  3. They usually move in groups/herds in search of food.
  4. They have two tusks along with a trunk which are made of ivory.
  5. Hunters (Poachers) kill Elephants for their tusks (ivory).
  6. The Tusks are elongated, continuously growing front teeth of an Elephant.
  7. The external teeth of the elephant are called tusks.
  8. Ivory is used to carve into jewellery and art objects.
  9. Animals feel pain and fear like we do, but they are often helpless because they cannot say what happened to them.
  10. They are often ill-treated by human beings always for their own selfish needs.
  11. Animal cruelty includes many kinds of mistreatment like failing to provide essential care, killing or torturing of an animal.
  12. Human beings also sacrifice animals for religious beliefs and superstitions.
  13. Horseshoes are things worn by horses to protect their feet (hooves) when they walk –like a shoe
  14. Most horseshoes are made of iron or steel
  15. Using nails does not hurt the horse if done properly, as the outer part of the hoof cannot sense pain.
  16. An animal who wears horseshoe in its hooves is Horse.

  19. The sound made by an elephant is Trumpet.
  20. A place reserved by the government for the conservation of wildlife is called wildlife sanctuary.

  22. Elephants sleep only for 2-4 hours in a day. They do not rest much.
  23. Elephants flap their fan like ears to keep them cool.
  24. The elephant herd may have 10 to 12 female elephants and young ones.
  25. Egret is often found sitting on the buffalo’s back.
  26. Male elephants live in the herd till they are 14-15 years old.
  27. Elephants and their babies love to play in mud and water.
  28. The grey forest Nandu imagined he was in was actually the legs and trunks of his family members.

  30. Nani ma is the oldest in the herd.
  31. Nandu saw his brothers and sisters pulling each other’s tails.
  32. Nandu did not go near them as he was small and he was worried they will fall on him.
  33. Amma gently pushed Nandu towards the water, telling him to go and play.
  34. Fountain of water fell on Nandu’s head.
  35. Nandu settled between his mother’s front legs and fell asleep as he drank her milk.

Q.1) Write a few lines about a herd of elephants.

  1. The elephant herd may have 10 to 12 female elephants and young ones.
  2. The oldest female elephant is the leader of the herd.
  3. Male elephants live in the herd till they are 14-15 years old. Then they leave their herd and move around alone.

Q. 2) How does the elephant cool its body?

  1. The Elephants keep their bodies cool by laying down in water and mud.
  2. Elephants flap their big ears like fans to keep themselves cool.

Q.3) How is the trunk useful to an elephant?

  1. The trunk acts as its hand. Trunk helps the elephant to break the tree branches and take the leaves to its mouth.
  2. It also sucks up water with its trunk and shoots it like a fountain into its mouth.
  3. The trunk helps the elephant to breathe.

Q. 4) Describe the Tusk of an Elephant.

  1. The Tusks are elongated, continuously growing front teeth of an Elephant.
  2. They have two tusks.
  3. The tusks are made of ivory which is a white, smooth, solid substance.
  4. It is used to carve into jewellery and artefacts.

Q.5) How are snakes, bears and monkeys ill-treated by human beings?

Animals are often ill-treated by human beings always for their own selfish needs:

  1. Snake charmers keep snakes in the basket for the whole day and so they cannot move freely in forests and can’t breathe fresh air.
  2. Bears have to dance and jump in circus. If they don’t do this, they don’t get any food and get a beating also.
  3. Monkeys have to dance in pain on an empty stomach.

Q.6) How is an elephant physically different from other animals?

  1. Elephant has characteristic long nose or trunk.
  2. They have large, floppy ears and wide, thick legs.
  3. They have two continuously growing front teeth called tusk.
  4. They have wrinkled skin.

Q.7) Define zoo/Wildlife Sanctuary (OR) what is the difference between Zoo and a Wildlife Sanctuary. Give Examples

 ZOO WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
1A zoo is a place where animals are kept in enclosed spaces.1A wildlife sanctuary is a place reserved by the government for the conservation/ preservation of wild animals in their natural habitat.

Q.8) Why does the egret sit on the back of buffaloes?

The egret sits on the buffalo to eat insects that stick on the skin of buffalo. They both benefit each other as the egret gets its food and the buffalo gets rid of germs and insects.

Q.9 A) Anvi’s uncle gifted her pair of ivory bangles on her birthday. The bangles were beautiful, but she returned them. Why?

Anvi returned the ivory bangles as-

a. The bangles were made from ivory which is obtained from the elephant’s tusk.

b. She did not like the fact that elephants were killed by the poachers to obtain this ivory.

Q.9 B) The number of wild animals is decreasing. Why?

The number of wild animals is decreasing due to: –

  1. Growing human population resulting in the loss of natural habitat.
  2. Deforestation.
  3. Forest fire.
  4. Pollution –air, water and land.
  5. Superstition and entertainment.

Q. 10) How are animals classified? Give examples.

Animals are classified based on their food habits.

Animals that eat plants are called herbivores.Example: Cow, Horse, Goat, Giraffe etc.Their sharp front teeth help them to cut grass and leaves.  Flat grinding teeth at the back help them to chew the food.Elephant’s trunk and Giraffe’s long neck help them to reach and eat leaves from trees.Animals that eat the flesh of other animals are called carnivores.Example: Vulture, Lion, Eagles, Tiger etc.They have long, sharp teeth and claws, which help them to tear flesh.They have strong legs to run fast to catch their prey.Animals that eat both plants and animals are called omnivores.Example: Human, Bear, Crows etc.

Q.15) Write a few lines about Nandu.

  1. Nandu is a three months old baby elephant
  2. It weighs around 200Kg
  3. Feeds on mother’s milk.
  4. Youngest in the herd and loves to play in water.

Q. 16) Write a few lines about Elephants.

Elephants are herbivores. They eat twigs and leaves.

Herd of Elephants:

  1. The elephant herd may have 10 to 12 female elephants and young ones.
  2. The oldest female elephant is the leader of the herd.
  3. Male elephants live in the herd till they are 14-15 years old. Then they leave their herd and move around alone.

Structure of an Elephant:

  1. Elephant has characteristic long nose or trunk.
  2. They have large, floppy ears and wide, thick legs.
  3. They have two continuously growing front teeth called tusk.
  4. They have wrinkled skin.

Threats like poaching/hunting lead to their extinction.

We can conserve Elephants by preserving habitats, creating awareness and imposing fines.

Q.17) Write a few lines about Elephants and their relationship with Humans:

  1. Elephants are used in circus.
  2. Elephants are used in processions.
  3. Elephants are used as transport.
  4. Elephants are used as pets.
  5. Elephants killed for their tusks.
  6. Tusks are made of Ivory.
  7. Ivory is used to make jewellery and artefacts.
  8. Elephants are held in captivity to carry loads.
