Baby Care Tips

BABY CARE TIP 1# After every feed, pat the baby over the back while holding the baby over the chest to burp, not one but atleast 2-3 burps to avoid regurgitation of milkBurping

Sit upright and hold your baby against your chest. Your baby’s chin should rest on your shoulder as you support the baby with one hand and lightly pat on the baby’s back.

BABY CARE TIP 2# Iron syrup stains the teeth, hence feed the syrup just before starting a meal, so that there isn’t any syrup residue left over the teeth.

BABY CARE TIP 3# Prefer Jaggery over Sugar.

  • Jaggery is far more complex than sugar, as it is made up of longer chains of sucrose. Hence, it is digested slower than sugar and releases energy slowly and not instantaneously. This provides energy for a longer time and is not harmful for the body.
  • Jaggery also gathers a considerable amount of ferrous salts (iron) during its preparation, as it is prepared in iron vessels

BABY CARE TIP 4# Revised IAP recommendation for Hepatitis B vaccine

The newer 2014 IAP immunization state that “The final (third or fourth) dose in the Hepatitis B vaccine series should be administered no earlier than age 24 weeks (6 months) and at least 16 weeks after the first dose”, hence please do prefer a combined DPT vaccine without Hep B (like pentaxim) rather than with Hep B like (pentavac), which will make it easier to give Hepatitis B vaccine seperately.

BABY CARE TIP 5# Why I dont advise on using “Toddler Crawl Mat Playing Carpet”

A foam mat is made up of Formamide which is classified as a reprotoxic substance (reproductive toxicity includes adverse effects on sexual function and fertility in adult males and females, as well as developmental toxicity in the offspring) and is used primarily in the chemical, pharmaceutical, plastics and polymer industries as a solvent, plasticiser or as an additive to foam blowing agents. In my experience or what many parents have told me, crawling mats are easier to tear even by a toddler and hence are more prone or open for the child to ingest tiny bits of the foam. If you do have to use mats (sometimes its a necessity if you are handling twins alone) then I suggest use of EVA interlocking foam mats after proper care.  For further details regarding various safer options of play areas please do read my article “How to arrange a safe age appropriate play area and nursery”

  2. I like what you said about making sure that you get your child his vaccines. I need to get a daycare specialist to help watch my kids. I need them to watch my kids while I am at work.

  3. Hey Gauri,
You are really doing a great job by spreading awareness about parenting. There are very limited resources on the internet and most of the mothers find it difficult to write blogs along with caring their babies. You are doing a that deserves a lot of appreciations as well. Hope these tips will gonna help many among us. I really enjoyed reading most of your parenting tips. Just keep going.

    1. The vaccines used in government hospitals are very affordable and also maintaining records is mandatory which will be provided to you. DPT vaccines used are mostly the painful variety, hence the baby will require more attention after vaccine. Overall no harm in opting for these vaccines.

    1. Hi Akshata,

Congratulations!!! Most of the posts here on my blog are based on the daily experiences I have with my twins. As you can see on the home page on the right hand side there is a category section where you can find whatever information you want. Do check it out. It is a bit difficult to start joining back after a maternity leave in case of twins. It is much easier in case of a single baby. I suggest you talk to you family regarding the care of your babies in your absence. I did join back when my kids were 1 year and 8 months since I live in a nuclear family.

      Regards,
      Gauri
