Pretend Play: Investing in a good Playhouse and it’s benefits on child development.

Author: Gauri Kshirsagar

“Systematic research has increasingly demonstrated a series of clear benefits of children’s engagement in pretend games from the ages of about two and one half through ages six or seven.”

Dr. Scott Kaufman – 2012 Psychology Today article

As children’s time is taken up more and more with scheduled activities, it is important to consider what they are losing when they miss out on pretend play. In many ways, a few hours creating pretend ponies and galloping around the yard with fellow cowboys and cowgirls is as developmentally essential as any other pursuit. In today’s video game age, however, children are not getting the same opportunity that their parents had to engage in this freeform style of play. Children’s play houses are a great way to encourage children to take part in make-believe or imaginative play, allowing them to reap the child development benefits.

Art Appreciation: Akbar Padmasee’s Metascapes

Author: Gauri Kshirsagar

“…colours expand and contract, colours travel on the surface of the static painting… colour trajectory is strategy… A colourist needs to master the art of silencing some colours, so as to render others eloquent.” – Akbar Padmasee

Akbar Padamsee, India Myth and Reality, Aspects of Modern Indian Art, Oxford, 1982, p. 17

My twins who are 2nd graders now, have this interesting chapter in their art book called ‘Splish-splash’. This chapter explores different textures and colour combinations. There is also this interesting concept where they are asked to imagine a topsy-turvy world; a world with jumbled up colours. How does it make you feel? It is a very fascinating way to expose the children to think ‘out of the box’, to make them understand an impressionist’s view of the world. How an object is seen through a different perspective by an artist.

REVIEW: IKEA MÅLA Easel, softwood, white (Article no: 301.678.52)

I regularly explain concepts to my twins on a white board, which is mounted at my height therefore it becomes a bit tiresome when they want to use it.  I had been looking for an easel, which could be easily folded and stored. One of my twin prefers a white board and the other a black board with chalk when I ask them to just express themselves, to make sure they understand a concept by having them write it out or depict it, or explain concepts and ideas in a visual manner. I chose the IKEA Easel for it’s multipurpose use. The easel has a whiteboard on one side and a blackboard on the other with a space for a roll of paper in between. Before you read this review, please go through my article, INKJET V/S LASER: Which printer is the best option for your child.

This is an amazing all in one printing-scanning-copying machine. Offers more than other models like HP. Opted for this as it has an auto feeder, which makes copying/scanning of multiple pages much easy. In the HP machine, you had to insert and scan one page at a time. In this, you just load the pages on the feeder and it does it all automatically.

There is a point in your kid’s academic progress that buying a printer for home use becomes a necessity. One of the first things to decide is whether to buy an inkjet or a laser printer. If you are shopping for the best printer for child’s use, you’ve probably wondered what the differences are between inkjet and laser printers. Art has always had a big impact in my life. As a lover of all things beautiful, I want to make sure that my kids grow up willing and able to appreciate art, particularly classical art and good design. One of Pune’s biggest landmark, Empress garden in camp has been a host to numerable kid friendly activities over the past few years.
