In India, there are number of vaccines given to a child since birth right upto the age of five years. and each vaccine has a different schedule and dosage. To complicate further every vaccine has multiple brand names which determines its market cost. There isn’t a proper site which lists out the cost according to the Immunization schedule.
Hence to ease out this nerve wracking job of calculating the cost of vaccination each time you visit a doctor, I have compiled a list of various vaccines with their brand names, cost given at each week. So do download the file and relax!!!

Can you guide me regarding PCV vaccination. My baby Doctor advised me for DTP, Hib,IPV, OPV, Rotavirus and PCV and HEP B at 8 weeks of Birth. I got vaccinated my kid at Govt. Hospital and they gave Injection ‘Penta’ and told it has five injection including DTP, Hib and HEP. B and gave oral drop of OPV and Rotavirus and told IPV and PCV is not available at Govt. Hospital as per Govt. norms. They told if u wish you can take IPV and PCV from out side.
Whether is it necessary to take IPV if OPV is given at 8 week of age and whether PCV is required. My baby was born on 23.08.2016 and was given first Vaccination on 26.10.2016 which does not include IPV and PCV.
Can u guide me, if both are necessary when to plan for both these injections.
Thanks and regards

Hi Ajay
Injectable polio vaccine (IPV)is more potent than oral polio vaccine (OPV). So if you even miss a dose of OPV sometimes then it’s ok untill unless IPV course is completed and not the other way around. As per recent recommendation government has started IPV at its centers. Secondly I recommend vaccinating your child with PCV 13 or PCV 10 if cost is not an issue, since it provides protection pneumonia, ear infections and meningitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. It is recommended in children of less than 5 yearrs of age.
For the detailed schedule you can refer to my older blog posts.

I have read various post on the comparison(pros and cons) on that, but still confused for first vaccination of DwPT or DaPT. My doctor informed me price for each DaPT dose will be Rs. 4200/- and for DwPT will be Rs. 3000. Is it ok.
Also is it appropriate to get vaccination from Govt. setup.

Hi Ajay,
No doubt choosing between Acellular and cellular DPT is quite confusing, hence will make the following points to make your choice easier:
1) The original DTP vaccine, which(diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis) became available in the USA in 1948 and was critical to dropping the number of cases of whooping cough
2)Unfortunately, during the 80’s and 90’s, rare side effects of the available pertussis vaccines were noticed. Whole-cell DTP vaccines were associated with several local adverse events (for example, erythema, swelling, and pain at the injection site), fever, and other mild systemic events (for example, drowsiness, fretfulness, and anorexia) and rare side effects like convulsions and encephalopathy
3) Because of the safety concerns, scientists began develop a more purified version of pertussis component called “acellular”, in 1997, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended the full switch from the whole-cell to acellular pertussis vaccine. Almost all children were immunized using the acellular version by 1999.
4) In India due to the huge difference in price in cellular and Acellular vaccines, both are continued to be used in Government and Private practice.
5) Recently in 2013 there was an article published in Pediatrics supports the hypothesis that the whole cell vaccine is much more effective than the current acellular version.Hence many Pediatricians now recommend atleast one dose of cellular vaccine.
7) Many Government set ups do provide vaccines at a resonable price.
This is the link for the whole article: https://raisingtwinsblog.com/2016/09/16/comparing-effectiveness-of-two-types-of-pertussis-vaccines-cellular-and-acellular-dptdtp-vaccine/
Hope this information makes your doubts clear

Hello,
The 1st dose of MMR is recommended at 9 months. Previously this was at 12-15 months. The manufacturer of Priorix says to give this vaccine at 12 months of age.
Click to access priorix.pdf
Even the US recommends the 1st dose at 12 months.
http://www.immunize.org/askexperts/experts_mmr.asp
The guidebook on immunization published by the IAP also recommends the 1st dose of MMR to be given at minimum age of 12 months.
So what should I do now? Should the MMR 1 be given at 9 months or 12 months? I asked two doctors (pediatrics) wh0 gave differing opinions. One doctor said to give MMR-1 at 9 months. The other doctor said to give MMR-1 at 12 months and M-Vac (for Measles) at 9 months.
Totally confused ! Please help !

Hi,
Previously (ie before 2014) following was the IAP schedule of measles/MMR vaccine:
1) Measles at 9 months
2) 2 doses of MMR at 15-18 months and 4-6 years
But the newer 2014 IAP recommended schedule states that
1)Two doses of MMR at 9 and 15 months
2)No stand alone measles dose at 9 months
3)No MMR at 4-6 years of age

Hi, I do not want to give PCV to my baby due to three reasons, 1) Govt of India has not put it into the list of mandatory vaccines, 2) its very expensive, 3) sufficient data is not available to show that this vaccine actually works. Do I have a point?

Hi,
1) Following is the link to the IAP (Indian Academy of Pediatrics) website for the 2016 Immunization schedule: http://www.iapindia.org/page.php?id=129, as you can see PCV is recommended by IAP. I am not sure which Government source you have referred (please do provide the source)
2) The most common PCV vaccine used in India is Prevnar 13 which is manufactured by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Marketed by Pfizer Inc (http://www.prevnar13.com/), hence the cost is more (not sure why government has not reduced the cost or made it available at a reasonable price in government set up)
3) For more studies on PCV vaccine you can refer to IAP website
4) Last but not the least, to vaccinate or not to vaccinate your child is solely your decision as you are the primary care giver and responsible for his/her well being. Hope you will do the right thing

Gauri ma’am,
First of all, I would like to thank you sincerely for such a great useful post and creating awareness. I was searching for vaccine related information but I didn’t find any authentic and useful site/page except yours.
I have a serious question regarding charges for vaccination.
My parents recently in JUN-JUL-AUG gave pending vaccines (3) to their grand-daughter who is 6 years old. Those vaccines were related to flu and chickenpox.
They were charged 5000/- (five thousand) for each vaccine every time. So total they paid 15000/-.
After reading this article I am shocked. I am bit outraged if this is kind of loot (unreasonable charges) by doc. Rather than choosing different doc next time, I want to go to same doc but raise questions to her. Can you please guide me on how can I make that doc give reasons for her charges (of course doc need to have fear for providing wrong information to me)
I will certainly not take the answer that doc is free to charge as they think.
Please do reply.

Hi, Hemant.
I am confused as to if you paid 15,000 in total or everytime. In any case I suggest the following:
1. I have made the above list by visiting the vaccine manufacturers site. The above prices are for the year 2015. Latest I have checked they have not updated the price. I advice you to again check the price according to the brand.
2) Whenever you visit the doctor, the doctor also adds consultation and other charges to the total cost. Plus the cost may vary depending on the vaccine preferred by the doctor and the amount of stock bought . Hence it is quite difficult to argue on this point since the doctor is not obliged to give his/her treatment free or for a lesser charge. (If it’s a private practice)
3) The above vaccines are also available at Government dipensaries at a reasonable price
4) Last but not the least you can “discuss” with your doctor regarding the charges and other options for vaccines, for that you are obviously entitled to.
Hope you find a solution to your query
Regards,
Gauri

1)The varicella vaccine is given by injection when kids are between 12 and 15 months old. They receive a booster shot for further protection at 4 to 6 years of age.
2)Kids who are older than 6 but younger than 13 who have not had chickenpox also may receive the vaccine, with the two doses given at least 3 months apart.
3)Kids 13 years or older who have not had either chickenpox or the vaccine need two vaccine doses at least 1 month apart

Hi, I am afraid the cost of vaccines in Private clinics in Pune are in the same range. You can try Government dispensaries for reasonable price, but with lesser choice in brand and type of vaccine. Near Katraj area I recommend Bharti Vidyapeeth hospital or Dr. Lalvani’s clinic for good pediatric care.

Thanks so much for helping us make more informed decisions – Vaccines have become the biggest cash cows for company profitability nowadays. Dearth of IPV, so opted for Pentaxim without a choice, Municipal and Government hospitals in Pune not close to my place or make child wait for two plus hours. But even that the cost will vary according to the clinic since they also include consultation and procedure charges. All the vaccines mentioned in Indian immunization schedule are important. OPV 1 (oral polio drops) is given at 6 weeks. But injectable Polio vaccine (IPV) is more important. Additionally it is also given at pulse polio programmes. Hepatitis B 3 is given at 6 months or in combination with pentavalent vaccines, and is also important
LikeLike
Also the schedule of hepatitis B is: 0, 1 and 6 months, since some pentavalent vaccines have hepatitis B in it, they are given at 10 and 14 weeks. So if you are planning to give hepatitis B separately then why not give it in its original schedule. Do consult your doctor regarding this

Thanks a lot for sharing such an important information on the complete list of vaccinations for children… I would request you to update the COST at regular intervals & keep a fixed URL web page so that everyone can save the same URL to see your refreshed web page with updated cost or vacinations…
Thanks once again.

Hi,
You can download the pdf file I have attached in the blog post above which has detailed approximate cost of vaccines according to the brands used. Since each doctor uses different brands, the cost may vary. The cost of rota virus vaccine is also given. It’s important to give oral rota virus vaccine to prevent diarrhoea resulting in dehydration in children.
