  CHAPTER 26: DEFENCE OFFICER WAHIDA

Q.1) Who is Wahida Prism?

Ans) Lieutenant Commander Wahida Prism is a doctor in the Indian Navy. She is one of the few women who have worked on a naval ship. She is the first woman to lead a parade, which is considered to be a very big honour in the armed forces.

Q.2) What are the three wings of the Indian Armed forces?

Ans) The three wings of the Indian Armed forces are: The Indian Army, The Indian Navy and The Indian Air Force.

Q. 3) What are the tasks of the armed forces?

Ans) The Armed forces have four main tasks:

1. To defend the state and its citizens, if attacked by a foreign nation.

2. To support the civil community in case of disasters like floods, earthquakes etc.

3. To involve in social ceremonies, construction, emergency services and guarding important areas.

4. To promote international peace among the countries.

Ans) Navy Day in India is celebrated on 4th December every year to recognise the achievements and role of the Indian Navy to the country.

Q.5) What is ‘INS’?

Ans) The term ‘INS’ refers to Indian Naval Ship. All the ships under the service of Indian Navy bear their names with a prefix INS.

Q.6) In which other jobs do people wear uniform as in defence forces?

Ans) People wear uniforms in police services, paramilitary services, fire fighters, lawyers, nurses and people working in food services like chefs.

Ans) The main objective of the Indian Navy is to secure the nation’s naval (maritime) borders.

Q.8) What qualities of Wahida made her achieve her goal of joining the armed forces?

  1. While in school, Wahida attended camps, climbed mountains and was a ‘Girl Guide’.
  2. After she became a doctor, she appeared for an interview to join the Armed Forces. She got selected there and received training for six months.
  3. Earlier, women were not allowed to go on Naval ships but when an opportunity was given, she herself went forward and gave her name.

Wahida’s qualities of determination, hard work, sincerity and family support made her achieve her goal of joining the armed forces.

Q.9) Is there a hospital on a Naval Ship?

Ans)

  1. First aid is given on every naval ship.
  2. Each ship has one doctor and two or three assistants.
  3. Necessary medicines and some equipment are kept in a small room.

Ans) A prism is a kind of glass which refracts seven colours when white light passes through it. Wahida’s father gave this name to her in childhood because her father wanted her to be like a prism.

Naval officers are different from other doctors. Why?

Ans) In Indian Navy a naval doctor does not just give medicine to patients but is also a ‘Medical Officer’. The job of a Medical Officer includes –

  1. To make sure that everybody on the ship stays fit and healthy by carrying out regular medical check-ups of all the officers and sailors.
  2. To make sure that no garbage collects and there are no rats on the ship, as rats and garbage can spread diseases.
  3. To keep everybody ready for any medical emergency in case there is an accident on the ship such as fire.

A) First Aid – It is the immediate help given to an ill or injured person before the doctor arrives.

B) Indian Navy – The Indian Navy is the fifth largest branch in the world. Its main objective is to secure the nation’s naval (maritime) borders. Indian Naval Forces travel to the maritime borders in special submarines and naval ships.

C) Indian Army – The Indian Army is an organized armed land force.

D) Girl Guide – A Girl Guide group consists of a group of 20-30 girls who learn to become independent in life and take up special responsibilities like educating the poor, arranging and providing shelter and relief to people.

E) Prism– A prism is a kind of a glass that refracts white light into 7 colours (VIBGYOR) when it passes through it.

F) Submarine – A submarine is a watercraft capable of independent operation underwater. Submarines are an important part of The Indian Navy and are also used in tourism.

Q) Why did Wahida and her family move out of their village?

Ans) Wahida always wanted to become someone special and move forward in life. Though she was very interested in higher studies but it was a new thing in her area at that time, so her mother and father had to face many problems. Hence they had to move out of their village to live with her grandmother in Rajouri, where she did her twelfth class.

Q) How did Wahida become a doctor?

Ans) Wahida worked very hard. Her friends and family members helped her a lot.  She got admission in Jammu Medical College.  She studied for five years and did her M.B.B.S.

Q) Why did Wahida join the Indian Navy?

Ans) Wahida joined the Indian Navy because she was very fond of travelling and visiting different far-off places. She was born in the hills and now she is working at sea, which she enjoys.

Q) How was Wahida selected for the passing out parade? Was she nervous?

Ans) Wahida was not nervous, as she has been participating in parades since school. In the armed forces she practiced very sincerely. Her seniors had faith in her and gave this opportunity to her after seeing her performance for three years. After selection she practiced every morning and evening for a month.

Q)  Name five other occupations in the Navy?

Ans) Hydrographer, Pilot, Musician in the Naval band, Air traffic controller (ATC) and Law.
