17th May 11:30 pm (Night)

  • After Omana’s long train journey she reached Kottayam in the night.
  • Valiyamma’s house was not far from the station and they had to take two auto-rickshaws to get there.
  • At Valiyamma’s house Omana was very sleepy and did not even wait to eat anything. She took a bath and slept.

18th May (Early morning)

  • Early morning Amma woke her up again. They got ready, took their luggage and went to the bus stand.
  • Valiyamma’s family also came with them. They were ten people, and had a lot of luggage too!
  • In the bus, the bus conductor came and Appa bought tickets for all of them.
  • Omana’s family managed to get seats. As it went along, the bus got very crowded. People were sharing the seats. They also had to share their seats. (Seats are not reserved according to the ticket booked, also anyone can travel on the ticket)
  • The bus had dropped them by the water side. They had to travel across the water.
  • The bus dropped Omana’s family at the side of river.
  • Omana was happy to get off from the bus as her legs were stiff, she could hardly stand.
  • Omana’s mother explained that the ferry was used by people to cross the water and reach the other side.
  • A ferry is a merchant vessel used to carry passengers, vehicles and goods across a water-body.
  • Everyone had to pay the fare before getting on.
  • Immediately a big crowd of people started getting off – school children, men, women, all with their own packets and luggage.
  • As soon as the ferry got empty, the big rush started from our side. Very soon the ferry was full. It started off again.
  • As the ferry moved swiftly, she could see people, fishing, washing, bathing and working along the banks.
  • Just before the sun disappeared into the water (sunset), the ferry reached the island and stopped. It was time for them to get off. At last, they reached Ammumma’s place. What a long and interesting journey it has been!
  • In many parts of Kerala the ferry and other kind of boats are commonly used to travel from one place to another
  • Omana travelled by auto-rickshaw, bus and ferry after she got down from the train.
  • Modes of transport that require tickets to travel are bus, train and aeroplane.
  • Counter-bought tickets do not mention the names of the passengers travelling.
  • For commuting by a metro rail, we have to buy a ticket before our journey.
  • The different vehicles used by Omana during the whole journey other than railways are bus, ferry and auto-rickshaw.
  • The other family travelling with Omana got off at Kozhikode.
  • Kottayam and Kozhikode are in the state of Kerala.
  • A railway timetable gives details about the route of every train.
  • PNR stands for Passenger Name Record.
  • The person from whom we buy tickets in a bus is called a bus conductor.
  • Passenger Name Record is a ten-digit number which helps us to check the status of our ticket.
  • A ferry presents a cheap mode of transport as compared to bridges or tunnels.
