Special means of transport:

  1. In villages, bullock carts are common.
  2. In hilly areas mules, donkeys and horses are used.
  3. In deserts, camels or camel carts are used for transport.
  4. In forests, elephants are used.
  5. In developed villages, tractors are also used.

How many types of transport can you observe around you? How are they different from each other?

Land transport Air transport Water transport
1There are two means of land transport- roads and railways1Air transport includes airplane, helicopter, space shuttle etc.1Water transport includes boats, steamers and ships.
2Roads and railways connect different places.2They are used to travel very long distances in the shortest period of time.2They are mainly used by people living near water bodies such as rivers, lakes and sea.
3They also help us to transport food grains, medicines and other products.3Air transport is the fastest, but also the most expensive mode of shipping.3Water transport is the cheapest mode of transport for long distance travel.

Why is road considered to be the best means of transport? Why?

Ans)

  1. The biggest advantage that roads have over the other means of transport is that goods of any type can be taken right up to the final point where they need to be delivered.
  2. This is possible because roads can be built in all places even in the remotest areas (situated a long way away, distant).

Name the various people you find employed at the railway station.

  1. Station Master- Station Master is the head or overall in-charge of the functioning of the station.
  2. Ticket Collector – A Ticket Collector checks the tickets and sees whether the passengers are sitting in their proper places or not.
  3. Guard – The Guard signals the trains to start or stop.
  4. Railway Police- The railway policeprovide security to the trains and passengers at the stations.
  5. Sweeper– A sweeper cleans the trains and the platforms.
  6. Coolie/porter– A Porter helps the people to carry their luggage.

Question and answers:

Q.1) Omana had to travel alone to Kerala. Why?

Ans)

  1. Omana and her best friend Radha were very excited as they were going on a train trip to Kerala. Omana was going to her grandmother’s house and Radha was going with her family for a holiday.
  2. Then, just two days before their journey, Radha fell down from her bicycle and fractured her right leg. Her leg was put in plaster. The doctor said that she should not move her leg for six weeks.
  3. Radha’s family had to cancel their tickets. The two friends were very sad. They had made so many plans about what they would do together on the trip.

Q.2) Why was there so much confusion when the train reached Ahmedabad?

Ans) There was a lot of confusion when the train reached Ahmedabad because some people were getting off at the station and at the same time others were pushing in and trying to put their luggage inside, all from one door.

Q.3) If your train is moving from east to west, in which direction will the objects outside move?

Ans) When a train moves at a very high speed, things outside seem to be moving in the opposite direction. So if the train is moving from east to west, the objects outside move west to east.

Q.4) What food items had Amma packed in the tiffin box?

Ans) Amma had packed lot of food – dhokla with chutney, lemon rice, and some mithai.

Q.5) What idea did Radha’s Amma give to Omana?

Ans) Radha’s Amma asked Omana to write down everything about her trip in a diary. This way, when she came back, Radha could read all about her trip. This way she will not forget anything and it will also help her to pass the time on the train. Both the friends thought this was a good idea. Omana went home and found a notebook with blank pages to write all about her journey.

Q.6) Why do you think there was no water in the bathroom of the train in which Omana was travelling?

Ans) There was no water in the bathroom of the train because

  1. the stored water must have been used by many passengers
  2. and also there could be a possibility that the tap in the bathroom was leaking, so all the water had been wasted.

Q.7) Imagine that you are going on a long train journey. What are the things that you would carry with you to pass your time?

Ans: I would carry some story books, playing cards, games like snakes and ladders which I can play with my family. I would also carry a diary in which I could write about the scenery and the people whom I observe from the window.

Q.8) What did Omana see outside the window on the first day of the journey?

Ans) After lunch some people slept, but Omana was not sleepy. She kept looking out of the window. She saw the following:

  2. Sometimes they passed small villages. They seemed to be flying by.
  3. Earlier it was really hot. Now that it was evening, there was some breeze.
